‘ Introduction
This report introduces libraries and archives of historical documents in Mainland China and Taiwan, describing their recent situation, how to use them, etc. The report deals with only a small number of libraries and archives in Beijing, the Yangzi Delta and Taiwan that were visited by the author during the past couple of years. In recent years, many libraries and archives in China and in Taiwan have been introduced in Japan by young researchers, chiefly of the history of the Republican era. However, it is still difficult to find information on Chinese libraries and archives dealing with books and documents from the Qing and earlier periods, which are called "ancient books." In view of the circumstances, I have written this report primarily to complement information in this field. All information on China, on no matter which aspect, is already outdated as it goes to press, because all information on this rapidly changing society becomes obsolete very quickly. I only hope that this report will be helpful in some way to the readers.
